Stathis Arapostathis is Post-Doc Research Fellow in the University of Leeds working in the AHRC funded project, ‘Owning and Disowning Invention: Intellectual Property, Authority and Identity in British Science and Technology, 1880-1920’. His current research focuses on the co-construction of electrical technologies,  engineering and legal expertise in the context of law courts and in cases of patent disputes. He studied physics in the University of Thessaloniki, Greece and then completed his MSc in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology in the University of Athens, Greece. In 2006 he finished his DPhil. in the University of Oxford under the supervision of Prof. Robert Fox. His thesis entitled ‘Consulting Engineers in the British Electric Light and Power Industry, c. 1880-1914’ and was supported financially by the AHRC (Ref. No. 2002/60166). Before his appointment in Leeds he was associate researcher in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Athens, Greece. He still keeps his association with the History of Technology Unit in Greece and in that capacity he is member of the Greek research team and the Greek sub-project of Eurocrit. He has worked on the history of blackouts and accidents in the Greek electricity supply network with an interest in the co-construction of ‘risk’, electrical technologies, and technical and lay expertise. His recent research focuses on the blackouts and accidents in the Greek context since the 1950s with a particular interest in the blackouts of 2004 and 2007. He is SHOT’s International Scholars Fellow for 2007-2009 (non-stipendiary fellowship).
